Relatives of Ganimat Zahid Reduced Imprisonment Term by One Year
The Sumgait Court of Appeal announced on March 14 a decision following the complaint of Rufat and Rovshan Zahidov, nephew and cousin of the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azadlig, Ganimat Zahid, who is in political emigration.
The court reduced their term of imprisonment by only one year - from 6 to 5 years.
They were arrested in July 2015 on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale.
Zahid regarded the arrest of his relatives as revenge of the authorities for his journalistic work, and in particular, harsh criticism of the government in the Azerbaijan Hour television program broadcast from abroad.
Amnesty International has recognized the prisoners as "prisoners of conscience".
Subsequently, the convicts renounced Zahid and urged the media not to call them political prisoners. -06B--
