Republic Day in Washington

Yesterday on the occasion of the Republic Day, the embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington D.C. hosted a party for 700 people in one of the historic buildings in the capital, Andrew Mellon Auditorium.

According to the press release from the embassy, the party was attended by senators, congressmen , high officer ranks, numerous ambassadors and representatives of Azerbaijani , Turkish and Jewish Diasporas.

Congratulations were voiced by the Assistant U.S. Secretary of Energy Jonathan Elkind and a member of the US-Azerbaijan Friendship Group of the Congress Jackson Lee.

At the party, the singer of Argentine origin Maria Entraigues performed the national anthems of the United States and Azerbaijan.

The festive table abounded Azerbaijani national dishes, according to the press release. However, some of the guests recorded a “treat,” which the embassy did not mention. It was a girl in the garb resembling Aztec costumes in the middle of the table. She was standing in a hole in the center of the table and around her on the tray were Japanese sushi or something.

What it all has to do with the Republic Day remains a mystery. -16d
