S. Aliyarli is elected to the Academy to Research the Turkic world
Professor of the Baku State University, historian Suleiman Aliyarli has been elected an honorary president and head of the Council of Elders of the World Congress of the Turkic peoples.
He was also elected an academician of the Academy to Research the Turkic world. Diplomas of the bth structures were awarded to Aliyarli on August 17.
An 83-year-old Aliyarli was awarded the honorary title for contribution to the study of the history and culture of the Turkic peoples.
Aliyarli graduated from Moscow State University in 1954. In Soviet times he was subjected to pressure and harassment for opposing the thesis on the voluntary joining Azerbaijan to the Russian Empire.
He was also attacked for publication in 1984 a study on the ethnogenesis of the Azerbaijani people, where an accent was made on the pan-Turkic historical roots.
In 1989-2000 Aliyarli headed the Toponymy Commission in the Parliament. In 1992-2001 he was a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission. Aliyarli is the author of over 150 scientific articles, seven monographs, and eight books. -03B06-
