Sumgait Court of Appeal Leaves Elchin Mammad in Jail
Baku/20.02.21/Turan: The Sumgayit Court of Appeal on February 19 did not satisfy the appeal against the sentence to human rights activist Elchin Mammad.
This is stated in the message of the public association Legal Education of the Sumgayit Youth.
According to the press release, the appellate court, when considering the complaint, rejected requests for a full and objective investigation of all the circumstances of the case.
On October 17, 2020, the Sumgayit City Court sentenced Mammad to 4 years in prison, finding him guilty of "theft" and "illegal possession of weapons."
The human rights defender was arrested in March 2020. A woman to whom he provided legal assistance complained about him. Before that, the said woman also complained about the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov.
Mammad connects the criminal case against him with his human rights activities.
He believes that his prosecution on trumped-up charges contradicts President Ilham Aliyev's anti-corruption policy and his initiatives to reform the judicial and legal system.
International organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FIACAT and others condemned the arrest of Mammad.
Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner. —03B06-
