Sumgayit Salafis speak about torture in the city police
A group of believers-Salafi appealed to Turan agency regarding the arrest on November 13, and violence in the city police. They were detained near the house of Zohrab Shikhaliyev, in the yard of which is their chapel. Z.Shikhaliyev himself was arrested the same day, and according to the police, arms and ammunition were found in his yard. One of the detainees, the second group of disabled of the Karabakh war, Zaur Mehdiyev, said that people in civilian clothes offered him to drive to the police.
There he was handcuffed and beaten. "They beat me on the back and on the head. I said that I was injured and I have pieces in the body, but they continued to beat," said Mehdiyev. Besides, eight more people were detained, beaten and humiliated: the police took off their pants and shoved batons in their mouths.
"We were not explained what for we were punished. Police only demanded to shave our beards, " said Mehdiyev. The detainees were released after 6-7 hours. Mehdiyev said that he and other believers passed medical examination in Sumgait trauma hospital. Injuries were recorded in the book of registration of patients, but no references were given tyhem. Mehdiyev said that they called 102 service 102 and sent a telegram to the President of Azerbaijan, the Prosecutor General, the head of the Interior Ministry, the Ombudswoman. Deputy head of police office, named Suleyman beat the believers more actively, Mehdiyev said.
Another believer, Vidadi Maharramli ,also invalid of the Karabakh war, said that he was beaten on the kidneys, the places where he had the war wounds. "We are puzzled why that beat us. The state takes care of the war disabled, gives cars, apartments, recently I was sent for treatment to a sanatorium Naphthalan. Why do they treat us so?" he said.
Believer Rashad Sultanov said that a citizen of the Russian Federation. He returned to Sumgayit on November 12; he was also arrested at Shikhaliyev’shome, and taken to police. "First an officer named Ramil speak me well, but then came deputy chief, named Suleyman, and began to beat and insult.
I will not leave this matter just so," said Sultanov.
Other believers expressed general concern that all parishioners of the chapel can be brought to justice. However Shikhaliyev is not guilty, and was always loyal to the government, and rejects violence.
According to them, these believers do not belong to the radical movements, and prayed there because there is not a Sunni mosque in Sumgait. They ask the President of Azerbaijan and the Attorney General to intervene in this case in order to stop the pressure on believers in Sumgayit, to take action against those who tortured and threatened them.

Last night, three earthquakes occurred along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border with magnitudes of 4.8, 3.0, and 3.8, according to the Republican Center for Seismological Service of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported no information about any destruction or casualties as a result of the earthquakes.
