Term of Theologian’s Arrest Extended for Month
Yesterday the Masalli district court extended for another month the term of arrest of the Shiite theologian, member of the Mejlis of the Spiritual Figures of Azerbaijan, the editor-in-chief of the website Maide.Az Sardar Babayev.
The term of his arrest was extended until April 1, the lawyer Javad Javadov told Turan IA.
Babayev was arrested on February 22 on charges under article 168-1.3 of the Criminal Code (violation of the requirements of religious propaganda).
According to the investigation, he violated the law by conducting religious ceremonies, although he was educated abroad.
The defense considers this norm of the law to be contrary to the European Convention and draws attention to the fact that the leaders of the Muslims of the Caucasus also received education abroad.
Babayev does not accept the accusation and considers his arrest an order of the regional authorities. The lawyer Javadov believes there are no grounds for extending the term of arrest.
“Sardar Babayev does not intend to hide from the investigation. At the beginning of the investigation, when the theologian was at large, he was on the first call to the police.
On the other hand, there are no witnesses in the case and the accused cannot exert pressure on anyone, if he remains at large. The extension of the arrest is another evidence of the customized nature of the case against Babayev,” the lawyer said. -03B-
