The Court of Appeal rejected applications on the NIDA activist trial
Baku / 27.04.17 / Turan: Today in the Baku Court of Appeal a preliminary trial in the case of the activist of the NIDA movement Elgiz Gahramanli took place. A lawyer Fariz Namazli told Turan, the defense filed petitions to replace the measure of restraint and consideration of the complaint with a partial judicial investigation.
The judge did not satisfy any of the petitions and ordered a substantive hearing on May 11.
Gahramanli was arrested on August 12, 2016 on charges of a large-scale illicit drug trafficking. On January 16, 2017, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced him to 5.5 years imprisonment.
The NİDA movement announced political motives for Gahraman's arrest, calling the publication in Facebook the true cause of the arrest, where he mocked about the comparison of Ilham Aliyev's son with the prominent state figure Shah Ismailov Khatai.
Gahramanli is recognized by local human rights organizations as a political prisoner.-05B06--
