The trial of theologian Taleh Baghirzadeh
On Monday, the Sabunchu district court presided by Samir Aliyev held a preliminary hearing on the case of the theologian Taleh Baghirzadeh (Baghirov), accused of illegal possession of drugs.
According to the attorney Javad Javadov, who talked to Turan, he put forward a motion to change the arrest for house arrest and to exclude several proofs from the records. However, the judge rejected the request and ordered the trial for Oct. 28.
During the trial outside the court, believers held a rally in support of Baghirzadeh, chanting religious slogans.
Baghirzadeh rejected the accusation and said the criminal charges are trumped up for political reasons.
According to the Interior Ministry, Baghirzadeh was arrested along with his driver Anar Melikov on March 31. The theologian was allegedly seized 1,026 grams of heroin, while Melikov was confiscated a gun Makarov, 4 cartridges and a knife.
The Melikov case was allocated to a separate proceeding, and on 7 August, he was sentenced to a year and 7 months in prison. -16B06-
