There are 122 political prisoners in Azerbaijan, human rights activists
Baku/10.12.21/Turan: The Union for Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan has updated the list of persons arrested or convicted for political reasons.
There are 122 surnames in the list, which are classified into six groups:
“Journalists and Bloggers” - 5 people;
“Members of opposition parties and movements” - 8 people;
“Believers” - 21 people;
"Convicted in the Terter case" - 27 people
"Convicted in the Ganja case" - 47 people
“Life-sentenced prisoners” - 14 people.
New on the list were those arrested on charges of drug trafficking: PFPA member Mutallim Orudjev and Malik Rzayev, who were deported on readmission from Germany.
In addition, a member of the Spiritual Workers of Azerbaijan Association Sardar Babayev has been added to the list.
The previous list, released on September 1, also included 122 people. However, since then bloggers Elchin Hasanzade and Ibrahim Turksoy have been released.
* The list was compiled by the director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus and the head of the Center for Monitoring Political Prisoners Elshan Hasanov according to the criteria for defining the concept of "political prisoner" set out in Resolution No. 1900 adopted at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in October 2012 –06В-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
