Tortured Officer Acquitted Posthumously
Baku / 10.06.19 / Turan: Human rights activist Oktay Gulaliyev published on Facebook court documents on the death of a soldier of the Ministry of Defense, colonel-lieutenant Saleh Gafarov, from torture in 2017.
The same materials were published in Criminal.az.
Gafarov was arrested on charges of treason on May 4, 2017. Gafarov died during the investigation, but a year later - on May 4, 2018 the criminal case was dismissed, and the deceased was acquitted.
Gafarov was a professional officer. He actively participated in battles and was repeatedly awarded orders and medals for his impeccable service.
On May 4, 2017, he was forcibly taken away from his home and tortured to death by fellow military men in Terter.
According to Gulaliyev, high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense committed violence.
In the court records there is a detailed description of Gafarov's body, proving wild torture of him. At the same time, he did not receive medical assistance.
The officer was demanded to recognize cooperation with the special services of Armenia.
After his death, Gafarov was secretly buried in a cemetery in his native village Aydingyshlag of the Gabala region under reinforced security measures with the participation of 300 police and military officers. Family members and relatives were not allowed to attend the funeral.
After many months, this crime of the military group was exposed and the military who killed the officer was arrested and convicted. The investigation revealed that Saleh Gafarov and his other colleagues were innocently tortured.
However, the perpetrators (5 military) were convicted not for the murder of Gafarov, but on other charges and were given only 6 years of imprisonment.
The Ministry of Defense and the Military Prosecutor"s Office did not release any comments on these facts. A representative of one of these bodies, who wished to remain unnamed, merely noted that the courts had already given a legal assessment of what had happened. -03B06-
