The EU does not link negotiations on Ukraine with Russian gas supplies
The European Commission denied a report by Financial Times about discussions within the European Union regarding the potential resumption of Russian pipeline gas supplies to the EU as part of a settlement of the situation in Ukraine.
"We are not making such a link with peace talks. When the day for peace negotiations comes, it should include Ukraine, and we do not confirm any link as stated in this article. There is no connection between gas transit through Ukraine and negotiations," said European Commission spokesperson Paola Pinho at a briefing in Brussels.
In response to a follow-up question, she confirmed that the EU’s policy of reducing dependency on Russian energy sources remains unchanged. "We aim to gradually phase out imports of Russian gas and oil," the spokesperson said.
