Trial on Intigam Aliyev Case Rescheduled for January 23

Scheduled for January 16 in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, the preliminary hearing on the case of the human rights defender Intigam Aliyev was postponed to January 23.

Judge Rasim Sadikhov explained that with the absence of all the victims in the case.

To express support to Intigam Aliyev about 100 civil society activists came to the courthouse, including opposition leaders Jamil Hasanli, Ali Kerimli, Mirmahmud Miralioglu and others.

However, the meeting was scheduled in a small hall, where only a half of the people that came could fit. Not all members of the Western diplomatic missions could enter the room.

Aliyev himself was put in an iron cage. He looked a little pale and haggard. However he demonstrated good spirits and warmly welcomed the participants and asked not to worry about him.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on 8 August 2014 on charges of illegal business, tax evasion and abuse of office. Subsequently, he was also accused of embezzling and official forgery.

Aliyev denies all charges and says they are politically motivated.

Amnesty International recognized him as a "prisoner of conscience". -06D-
