Two activists of the "Muslim Unity" sentenced to 4 years in prison
Baku/19.20.23/Turan: The verdict of Samir Babayev, a member of the Muslim Unity Movement (MUM) accused of drug trafficking, was read out in the Baku Serious Crimes Court on Thursday. He was detained on December 2, 2022 and charged under Article 234.1-1 (Illegal acquisition or possession of drugs on a large scale) and arrested for 4 months. According to the investigation, Babayev was detained with three bags of methamphetamine with a total weight of 9.695 grams.
Lawyer Fariz Namazli told Turan that there was no reliable evidence of the activist's guilt. The accusation was based on the testimony of the police themselves and two witnesses. Despite pressure from the police, Babayev did not confess.
In addition, Babayev's "personal search" was conducted not at the place of detention, as prescribed by the precedent decisions of the Strasbourg Court, but a few hours later in the police. According to the lawyer, the verdict will be appealed.
A day earlier, on October 18, the verdict of another DME activist, Bakhtiyar Babashov, who was also arrested for 4 years in prison on the same charge, was read out in the Baku Court for Serious Crimes. This was reported to Turan by his wife, journalist and human rights activist Arzu Abdullah.
According to her, Babashov was detained on March 9, when he was actually abducted and for several days the family did not know anything about his fate. The detainee was not allowed to contact his relatives, invite a lawyer of his choice. During the judicial investigation, no evidence of Babashov's guilt was presented and he was convicted only on the basis of police testimony.
According to local human rights activists, hundreds of believers and religious activists have been detained in Azerbaijan over the past year. Some of them were later released, but most were arrested on charges of drug trafficking. Analysts attribute the mass arrests of Shiite believers to the aggravation of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran. ---06B---
