Baku / 18.03.19 / Turan: On March 18, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes pronounced the verdict on the criminal.az website editor Anar Mammadov.
Recall that on July 9, 2018, the Prosecutor General"s Office opened a criminal case on the dissemination of "false information" and "illegal appeals" to the Internet in connection with the attempt on the life of the chief executive of Ganja Elmar Veliyev and the energy blackout in Mingachevir in the summer of 2018.
After that, the prosecutor's office appealed to the Ministry of Communications to block the websites Bastainfo.com, Criminalaz.com, Topxeber.az and Fia.az.
Mammadov was charged under the Criminal Code articles: 281.2 (appeals against the state), 309.2 (abuse of office) and 313 (official forgery) of the Criminal Code.
On March 12, the prosecutor requested that Mammadov be sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment on probation for two years. On March 15, the lawyer and Mammadov made a closing statement and asked to acquit the journalist. The lawyer pointed out that the publications incriminated to the journalist were reprints from other media. In general, in the opinion of the defense, the publications corresponded to the freedom of expression.
Today, the court announced the verdict, fully satisfying the demand of the public prosecutor. The defense does not agree with the decision of the court and intends to appeal it. Earlier, independent experts state that the criminal prosecution of journalists for the coverage of the attempt on the chief executive of Ganja Elmar Veliyev and the blackout because of the accident at the Mingachevir Thermal Power Plant was not justified. -06D--
