Will Lamia Guliyeva Be Released?
The Baku Court of Appeal on February 12 will consider complaints from the prisoner Lamia Guliyev, her lawyer Anar Mammadov told Turan.
According to him, the Prosecutor General's Office filed a protest to the Khatai court for the verdict of imprisonment of Guliyeva for 5 years and 6 months.
In 2003, Lamia Guliyeva was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of the son of the former chief executive of Shamkir, Aslan Aslanov.
The real term was completed in 2013. However, in 2012 Guliyeva was handed a new sentence - imprisonment for 5 years and 6 months. Thus, the general term for Guliyeva was 15.5 years.
Recall that Guliyeva says that in 2003 she committed the murder of the son of the chief executive Ruslan Aslanov for the fact that he raped her. Then he told her fiance that Lamia was an unserious girl and tried to dissuade him from marrying.
Then she called Ruslan for a talk and stabbed him in the presence of her fiance.
In 2012, when the sentence expired, Lamia was charged with disorderly conduct in prison (Article 317), and in 2013 - under Article 182 (extortion by threats).
On the third charge Khatai Court Judge Ibrahim Ibrahimov acquitted, but prosecutors came to protest, and the judge of Baku Court of Appeal Sahibhan Mirzoyev overturned the acquittal. Thus, the term for Lamia Guliyeva was extended for six and a half years.
Wide resonance in the last days was caused by information about the birth of a child by Lamia Guliyeva in custody. Human rights activists believe that in prison Guliyeva was raped and it was a continuation of a series of punishments for the murder of the son of the chief executive.
Following extensive publicity, the same prosecutor's office, which appealed the acquittal of Guliyeva, now recognized her right to file a lawsuit against the verdict of disorderly conduct and extortion.
What is happening shows that this scandal and lawlessness attracted the attention of senior management of the country, which ordered an investigation. It is likely that on 12 February the court recognizes sentences of 2012 and 2013 not justified and Guliyeva will be released.
At the same time, we should expect a lot of trouble for the former chief executive of Shamkir Aslan Aslanov, who is considered the initiator of all these iniquities. -03B04-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
