The director of the famous British Museum Victoria and Albert Martin Roth is in Baku. On April 9 he was received by the Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev, who informed the guest about the upcoming Third Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, on the activities of museums in the country, the organization of exhibitions and exchange between museums, in particular, between the Victoria and Albert Museum and the museums of Azerbaijan.
In turn, Martin Roth expressed interest to collaborate with the local museum professionals and exchange of exhibits. In particular, he expressed interest in the Museum of the carpet, to the village of Lahij and other historical places of the country, the website of the Ministry of Culture.
The Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the most famous British Museums. There, in particular , is the largest Azerbaijani carpet of the 16th century "Sheikh Safi", the total area of 56 square meters.
* This carpet is woven by Tabriz masters Maksud Cachin, who, along with apprentices worked for about two years and finished it in 1539. Carpet adorned the tomb of the Safavids in Tabriz, and in 1891 it disappeared.
A year later, "Sheikh Safi" was exhibited in London on sale for 200,000 pounds (at current rate of several tens of million pounds).
Victoria and Albert Museum appealed to the community to raise money to buy a carpet so that the Germans do not buy it. The British have shown solidarity, and the money has been collected. Since then, "Sheikh Safi" became one of the most valuable among 4 million eExhibits of the museum of fine arts. -02D-
