In a vibrant tribute to one of Azerbaijan’s most beloved artistic figures, the Scientific-methodical and Advanced Training Center on culture (MEMIM), in collaboration with the Azerbaijan State Art Gallery and the Union of Azerbaijani Artists, concluded the "Tablolarda Nağıllar" (Fairy Tales on Canvases) exhibition-competition on December 13, 2024. The event celebrated the 115th anniversary of People’s Artist Səttar Bəhlulzadə, whose timeless work continues to inspire generations.
Səttar Bəhlulzadə (1909–1974), a towering figure in Azerbaijani art, left an indelible mark with his poetic realism and decorative expressionism. His works are a vivid celebration of Azerbaijan’s natural beauty, often capturing the country’s majestic landscapes—mountains, rivers, and meadows—through a lyrical lens. With a palette as vibrant as the land he loved, Bəhlulzadə’s paintings brim with romanticism, spirituality, and a profound connection to his homeland.
A Kaleidoscope of Styles and Stories
The "Tablolarda Nağıllar" exhibition brought together over 30 young artists who presented more than 40 paintings inspired by Azerbaijan’s rich tapestry of folklore and mythology. From epic tales like The Book of Dede Qorqud and Koroghlu to classic fairy tales such as Malikmammad, Beautiful Fatma, and Tiny Khanum, the canvases explored themes of heroism, love, and magic. Mythical figures like the Simurgh bird and the dragon Ədjaha also made their presence felt in vibrant hues and evocative forms.
The artists employed diverse styles—ranging from avant-garde and abstract to realism and miniature painting—to interpret these timeless narratives. Each canvas, steeped in color and creativity, invited viewers into the enchanting world of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage.
Honoring Young Talent
The competition culminated in an awards ceremony at the Union of Azerbaijani Artists, where winners were announced:
- First Place: Nərmin Abdullayeva
- Second Place: Röya Həsənova
- Third Place: Elçin Hüseyn
Winners received diplomas, while other notable participants were awarded certificates of distinction. The event’s curator, Dürdanə Qurbanova, an art historian and member of the Union of Azerbaijani Artists, emphasized the importance of fostering young talent and celebrating the country’s artistic traditions.
A Journey Into Azerbaijan’s Soul
The exhibition, open to the public until December 15, invites art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in a magical world where folklore and fine art converge. Hosted at the Union of Azerbaijani Artists, the event not only commemorates Bəhlulzadə’s legacy but also serves as a reminder of the enduring power of art to connect past and present.
For those who visit, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the profound interplay between mythology, nature, and artistic expression—a fitting tribute to the man who brought Azerbaijan’s landscapes to life with his brush. As the fairy tales leap from the pages of history onto the canvas, the exhibition reaffirms the timeless relevance of storytelling and creativity in shaping cultural identity.
