Putin grants Depardieu a Russian citizenship

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to French actor, Gerard Depardieu,  according to the press service of the Kremlin.

In late December, Depardieu went to Belgium. The actor has decided to relocate after the tax reform of the new president, Francois Hollande, who imposed a tax of 75% on income over a million euros a year. Later, Depardieu said he intends to give  back a French passport and ask for Belgian nationality.

The media reported that Depardieu may obtain Russian citizenship. The next day Putin commented on  the situation; he said that if Depardieu wants to get a Russian passport, he will get it.  The Federal Migration Service (FMS), reported that  it did not received from the actor any requests for a residence permit or citizenship.

"In accordance with paragraph "a" of Article 89 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, to meet the application of Gerard Depardieu Xavier, who was born in 1948 in France, for citizenship of the Russian Federation," said  the release from the Kremlin. -02D-
