Former head of the Turkish General Staff is arrested

Former head of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Ismail Hakki Karadayi  has been arrested today on charges of attempting  state coup in 1997,  according to Turkish media.

On Thursday, the General will be delivered to Ankara to give evidence about the events of 1997, when, under the pressure of servicemen, he  was ousted by the Prime Minister, Erbakan Necmettin. The investigation in this case was initiated last year, and in its framework several high-ranking servicemen have been arrested.

In 2009, the name Karadayi wasmentioned in the investigation of the case "Ergenekon", the members of which allegedly met in 2003 to overthrow the government of Erdogan. However, then the General was not charged. -02D-
