Shooting in Baku, tension in Karabakh. What's happening? - Elhan Sakhinoglu

Baku/23.03.23/Turan: On Saturday last week, collector Rufat Hashimov was killed in an armed attack at the “Bravo” hypermarket in the Khatai district of Baku. At the same time, Samir Sheydaev, an employee of “Unibank”, was seriously injured. According to the head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Elshad Hajiyev, one of the attackers at the “Bravo” hypermarket was killed, and the second was detained.

According to the information released by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry on March 5, operational information was received about the use of the Khankendi-Khalfeli-Turshsu dirt road for the transfer of weapons, ammunition and personnel from Armenia to the territory of Azerbaijan, where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is temporarily located. In order to verify the information, an attempt was made to stop and check cars carrying out illegal military transportation by units of the Azerbaijani Army.

To verify the information, units of the Azerbaijani armed forces tried to stop vehicles carrying out illegal military transportation. However, fire was opened on Azerbaijani servicemen, as a result of the exchange of fire, there are dead and wounded on both sides.

Azerbaijani Army servicemen Alibeyli Shahriyar Ramiz oglu and Huseynov Eshgin Jamil oglu were killed.

What's happening? Is there a connection between these events?

Political scientist Elhan Shahinoglu comments on the events in the "Difficult Question" program.

Shahinoglu doubted that the incident in the hypermarket was a provocation.

"Most likely, this is a criminal incident. This happens from time to time in different countries; banks and markets are raided. I don't think this is an action planned by any country," he said.

At the same time, he noted that he drew attention to the fact that one of the criminals in his Facebook profile shared photos related to Iran and even portraits of the supreme spiritual leader (Rahbar) Iran.

"This may arouse certain suspicions. But can any Iranian structures be behind this? I think a serious investigation will be conducted and if any state is behind this, that a provocation was being prepared, then it will be revealed," the political scientist noted.

As for the situation in Karabakh, according to Shahinoglu, after the 44-day war, it became necessary to create a checkpoint on the Lachin road.

"It was clear that mines and ammunition were being transported from Armenia to Karabakh, and the Russian peacekeeping contingent not only turned a blind eye to all this, but also condoned it. That's why the eco-campaign began. Obviously, there was a calculation that this way it would be possible to put an end to this. But the participants of the action did not have the opportunity to check vehicles. In addition, the Armenian separatists used bypass roads, so such an incident was expected.

According to the expert, Azerbaijan faces the task of creating a checkpoint on the Lachin road.

"In the statements of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, the following thesis runs through the red thread – "The incident once again shows that Azerbaijan needs to establish an appropriate checkpoint on the Lachin-Khankendi road," Shahinoglu said. In his opinion, it is unlikely that such unanimity is an accident, and the decision to create a checkpoint has already been made.--0--
