750 million manats required to finance salary and social benefits increase
Baku/13.01.23/Turan: Increase of salaries in some organizations, social benefits and scholarships will cover 1.9 million of Azerbaijani citizens from 1 January this year. This was stated by Deputy Minister Anar Kerimov at today's briefing at the Ministry of Labour & Social Security.
According to the Ministry, by new decrees and orders of the head of state from 13 January the social benefits and pensions have been raised for a total of 660,000 people. Scholarships for 150.000 students and doctoral candidates have also been raised.
According to the Deputy Minister, the state will allocate 750 million manats ($441.1 million) to finance the increase in salaries and social benefits, which are presented as another "package of social reforms".
Note that independent economists, as well as opposition politicians are critical of the government's approach to social guarantees of the state in light of the off-scale inflation rate in 2022, in particular the growth of food prices by more than 20%.
To their thinking, a 15% growth of salaries and social benefits will not be able to compensate for the rising costs of public sector employees and the socially vulnerable. As for the private sector, the only binding requirement is the minimum wage, which has been raised from AZN 300 to AZN 345 this year. -08B-
