Azerbaijan still believes in Caspian gas export to Europe by tankers

It is not ruled out that in the future Azerbaijan could export its gas to Europe by tankers, SOCAR’s President Rovnag Abdullayev told journalists on Monday.

SOCAR President said that he does not rule out implementation of Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnection (AGRI) project in the future.

“All projects have the right to life. Azerbaijan has huge gas resources and we have been also working on new fields, such as Absheron, and preparation for development of the perspective field Shafag-Asiman jointly with BP is in progress. The works are also in progress to develop the Umid-Babak field. We have a lot of gas resources and we need infrastructure to export them to the markets and from this viewpoint AGRI project could be also implemented in the future,” Abdullayev explained.

However, SOCAR president added that the Southern Gas Corridor is the priority project, its implementation has already started and “we have great possibilities for its expansion.”

“If the necessity arises and depending on the situation at the market, we could come back to AGRI project,” Abdullayev added.

AGRI project shareholders include SOCAR, Georgian COGC, Romanian Romgaz and Hungarian MVM, which found AGRI LNG Co company in January 20111. The share of each company in AGRI LNG Co is 25%. The chairman of Board of Directors of AGRI is SOCAR. The goal of the project is to consider possibility of Azerbaijani gas export from the Georgian Kulevi terminal to the Romanian Konstanza port. The initial variant of the project has proved its economic unprofitability.—0—
