Ilham Aliyev: we will not join
Azerbaijan does not intend to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the near future. This was stated by Ilham Aliyev, speaking yesterday at a conference on economic development of regions.
"Each country must protect its market and Azerbaijan is on this path. We have not yet entered the WTO, although we were insistently invited there," said Aliyev.
He explained the position of Azerbaijan protection of local producers.
"We first need to create the conditions for our farmers and companies. Otherwise, we will not be able to open our market to the free flow of poor quality, cheap foreign goods, because in this case, the local production will die, ruining the farmers," said Aliyev.
"Azerbaijan will become a member of the WTO. However, it will be up to us when to do this. Azerbaijan will join the WTO, when our agriculture and industry will be export-oriented. And then we'll see whether we are called to join the WTO as aggressively as we are now," said Aliyev .
Note that WTO accession is a precondition for signing a free trade agreement with the EU. -06D-
