In 2012, cars thrown into the atmosphere Baku 1.1 million tons of harmful substances

Baku on Tuesday held a conference on "The participation of civil society in the dialogue on policies for sustainable transport system, the relevance of which is dictated by the severe impact of vehicles on the ecological condition of the capital.

Emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere of the city of Baku with a population of about 3 million people in 2012 amounted to about 1.1 million tons, of which about 850 million tons (or 75%) accounted for by motor vehicles.

Despite improvements over the last ten years, road and transport infrastructure, the impact of vehicles on the environment does not fall, and vice versa, is increasing. Implemented measures do not also reduce stress on the roads, as they were not taken into account the views and recommendations of the public, according to experts of the Center for Environmental Law "Ecolex".

The representative of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture Jahangir Gojayev said that transportation problems are not always dependent on the capabilities of urban development, since in certain cases it is simply impossible formed certain arrays, where the engineering thought is powerless to offer new solutions to the growing needs of transport. In this case, his word should be said civic awareness. "The student, or any other citizen, sitting behind the wheel of a subcompact car, should ask himself a question: should take a walk or take a bus to get to the university or to the store?" said Gojayev. He also considers it necessary to use in Baku environmentally friendly means of transportation - a bicycle, electric transport (tram, trolley and electric trains).

Professor of Azerbaijan State Technical University Sulheddin Gezalov said that the density of vehicles in Baku high: 1 square kilometer 400 cars. It's not much compared to other cities of the world, where the figure is much higher. However, the feature of Baku that is road transport system is only 8-9% of its territory. The situation is also complicated by the fact that more than two-fold increase in the number of vehicles in the last few years ahead of the natural increase of the population, which was 11.2%.

A positive development, he said, is that the better changing age structure of the car: Today, a quarter of the age of vehicles does not exceed 5 years. Another 24.4% of the cars are in age from 5 to 10 years. But the problem is that half of the life of the car has become obsolete in terms of environmental requirements. This is the reason for the huge emissions of exhaust gases into the atmosphere.

The conference featured a number of proposals to resolve the situation. Among them, the introduction of a tax on car ownership, limiting traffic, etc.- 08C-
