KazMunayGas sent the first batch of oil from Kashagan to Baku for BTC export
The company "KMG Kashagan B.V.," a subsidiary of Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG), has sent the first batch of oil from the Kashagan field to Baku for export via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, the KMG press service reported.
"The Kazakh tanker Taraz, loaded with Kashagan oil, departed from the port of Aktau to Baku. The exporter is 'KMG Kashagan B.V.' The delivery is part of the implementation of the task given by Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to develop alternative export routes for the country’s hydrocarbons," the statement said.
The oil will then be transported via the BTC pipeline to the Mediterranean Sea.
"This step contributes to the further development of the Trans-Caspian international transport route," the company noted.
It is worth recalling that in 2022, KMG and Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR signed a general agreement on the transit of Kazakh oil. In March 2023, a test shipment of 7,000 tons of oil from the Kashagan field was made through Azerbaijan. The consignor was Inpex North Caspian Sea Ltd. By the end of 2024, Kazakhstan had exported 1.5 million tons of oil through BTC.
In March 2024, KMG and SOCAR signed an agreement for the phased increase of oil transit through Azerbaijan. According to the document, the supply volume is planned to increase to 2.2 million tons per year.
