Putin Announces Readiness for Meeting with Trump
Vladimir Putin has expressed his readiness to meet with Donald Trump to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and other pressing issues, emphasizing the need to take current realities and the interests of both countries into account. However, the Russian leader noted that serious peace negotiations with Ukraine are impossible without the repeal of President Volodymyr Zelensky's 2022 decree prohibiting talks with Moscow. Putin stressed that Western countries, which provide substantial financial support to Kyiv, should persuade Zelensky to lift this ban.
Putin described Trump as a smart and pragmatic individual, expressing doubt that the American president would make decisions detrimental to the U.S. economy. He also highlighted that Russia and the United States have numerous topics to discuss, including arms control and stabilizing energy prices, given that both nations are major oil producers and consumers.
Previously, Trump had stated his intention to meet with Putin and his desire for a swift end to the conflict, calling the war "absurd" and claiming it is "devastating" Russia's economy. However, Zelensky's ban on negotiations with Putin remains a significant obstacle to a peaceful resolution.
Putin emphasized that Russia is open to dialogue, but its nature will depend on the decisions and choices of the current U.S. administration. He also suggested that if Trump had been president in 2020, the crisis in Ukraine might not have occurred.
Thus, the prospects for peace negotiations remain uncertain, with much depending on the actions of the United States and Ukraine in the near future.
