Turkish Opposition Rally in Support of Secular Democracy
On Sunday in Istanbul a rally was held in support of democracy, organized by the Republican People's Party.
According to Turkish media reports, tens of thousands of people gathered in Taksim Square to protest against the coup d'état and support democracy.
They were holding numerous Turkish flags and portraits of the founder of the Turkish Republic Ataturk and chanted: "Turkey is and will be a secular country," "We - the soldiers of Ataturk" and others.
The leader of the Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu said the coup was directed against parliamentary democracy.
He said that coups should stay in the past and Turkey should follow the path of democratic development, human rights and the rule of law.
Note that this was the first rally of the ideas of Ataturk after the coup attempt.
Previous meetings were held by the ruling party and they sounded slogans in support of President Erdogan, religious slogans and appeals to execute the mutineers. -06D--
