Xiaomi's New Smart Factory to Operate 24/7 Without Human Intervention
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun recently announced on Weibo the upcoming operational status of a new generation smartphone production factory in Changping, Beijing, reports gizmochina.com. The announcement, accompanied by a video introduction, highlights the advanced capabilities of this “dark factory,” designed to function 24 hours a day without human intervention.
The new facility stands out as a fully automated factory where machines operate in seamless coordination. Remarkably, the factory maintains a dust-free environment autonomously, utilizing micron-level dust removal technology. The production quality is managed by self-developed intelligent machines, capable of manufacturing one smartphone unit per second. As emphasized in the promotional video, this smart factory marks only the beginning of Xiaomi's broader ambitions for the future of manufacturing.
Xiaomi has committed 2.4 billion yuan ($371 million) to develop this cutting-edge production process. The Changping factory, covering 81,000 square meters, has been recognized as a “national smart manufacturing benchmark enterprise” with an impressive annual production capacity of 10 million flagship smartphones. This facility will be responsible for producing Xiaomi's upcoming foldable phones, including the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 and Xiaomi MIX Flip.
Xiaomi's venture into automation is not new. The company’s smart factory in Yizhuang, Beijing, has been operational since 2019. This facility played a crucial role in the production of Xiaomi's first book-style foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi Mix Fold, showcasing the efficiency and potential of fully automated manufacturing.
Xiaomi’s investment in automated, human-free factories underscores its commitment to innovation and efficiency in manufacturing. By embracing advanced technology, the company aims to enhance production capabilities while maintaining high-quality standards. The Changping factory's success could pave the way for similar initiatives, reinforcing Xiaomi's position as a leader in smart manufacturing and setting a new benchmark for the industry.
