Arastun Orujlu: Threats from Sargsyan - Serious Signal
The events that unfolded in the last 2 months in Nagorno-Karabakh are a concern. Forecasts for the end of 2014 indicated that in 2015, there would be probably resumption of large-scale military operations at the front. In an interview with Turan the analyst Arastun Orujlu said this, commenting on the threats of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on January 26 on the readiness of pre-emptive strikes on Azerbaijan.
Orujlu noted with regret that during the shootings in December and January a lot of people were killed.
"However, the information of the parties is not credible because both parties use the event to promote," he said.
At the same time, Orujlu noted that the threats from Sargsyan are a new phenomenon. "Previously, such statements came from the Azerbaijani side. It seems that the statement from Sargsyan is due to the internal situation in Armenia and the geopolitical situation in the region," said Orujlu.
The political scientist believes that the case in Gyumri at the Russian base has increased social and political tensions in Armenia.
"In such cases, both sides, or rather the leadership of both countries applies a proven tool - the factor of the Karabakh conflict.
I think that one of the main motives for the statements of the Armenian President is this," said Orujlu.
Here a role is also played by the tension in the Armenian-Russian relations and the difficult socio-economic situation in Armenia, which is completely dependent on the Russian economy.
Despite all this, the statement of the President of Armenia is to be taken as a very serious signal, because there are real losses. No one can exclude that the regular exchange of fire on the contact line could turn into a large-scale military action, said Arastun Orujlu. -03B04-
