Arlem Desir Welcomed Release of Journalist in Azerbaijan
Baku/30.08.19/Turan: "I am pleased that, after serving his 5 years imprisonment sentence, journalist #SeymurHazi is finally free in #Azerbaijan. I call for the release of all other journalists and bloggers imprisoned in the country." The OSCE Special Representative for the Press, Arlem Desir, wrote about this in his micro blog on Twitter.
The columnist for the Azadlig newspaper and host of the Azerbaijan Hour television program, Seymur Hazi, was arrested five years ago. He was accused of hooliganism and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
He denied the allegations and declared a provocation against him and linked the arrest to his professional activities.
The international human rights organization recognized him as a "prisoner of conscience".
The European Court of Human Rights declared Hazi"s arrest unlawful and decided the journalist should be paid compensation in the amount of 13 thousand euros for moral damage and another 1,500 euros for reimbursement of legal expenses. -0-

According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper. The media outlet does not disclose the name of the "diplomat," only his initials – M.G.Ş. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
