Armenia-Azerbaijan: The Time For Peace "Is Now", U.S. Says

The United States said on Monday it continues to work to try to reach a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.

The move came just days after Baku and Yerevan accused each other of rejecting a proposed UK-mediated meeting between their leaders, the latest bump in the road on an on-and-off peace process aimed at ending the conflict.

"Armenia and Azerbaijan continue to make significant progress toward finalizing a peace agreement.  We are committed to supporting that process," State Department's Spokesperson Matthew Miller told a daily briefing when responding to TURAN's questions.

"As you have heard us say, the time for peace is now, and we continue to work to try to reach an agreement," Miller added.

The spokesperson refrained from commenting on the latest EU decision to support Armenia from the European Peace Facility, a move that Baku objected as "erroneous and dangerous".

The EU in a statement said that the aim of its €10 million worth assistance is to enhance the logistical capacities of the Armenian Armed Forces, and to contribute to improved protection of civilians in crises and emergencies.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have repeatedly said they want to sign a peace treaty to end the conflict as their foreign ministers most recently met in Washington D.C. two weeks ago in a meeting mediated by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
