At the UN General Assembly Azerbaijan voted to end the war in Gaza
Baku/28.10.23/Turan: On October 27, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas and demanding that humanitarian aid be allowed into the Gaza Strip and civilians be protected, the BBC reported.
The resolution was submitted by a group of Arab countries and was adopted by 120 votes in favor and 14 against. 45 States abstained, but the resolution is considered adopted if two thirds of the total number of voters voted for it. Azerbaijan and Turkey supported the resolution, as did Armenia, while Georgia abstained.
The resolutions of the General Assembly are not binding. According to Reuters, Canada tried to write into the resolution a paragraph condemning "the terrorist attack by Hamas ... and the hostage-taking," but the amendment did not pass - 88 countries voted "for", 55 - "against".
The resolution, however, demands the "immediate and unconditional release" of all prisoners, as well as humane treatment of them. ---0---
