Azerbaijan and the EU may sign a new partnership agreement in 2022
Baku/05.02.22/Turan: Azerbaijan and the EU may sign a new partnership agreement this year, stated Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on Friday at a press conference with European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varheli. According to him, the EU put forward a number of proposals for an agreement.
“Currently, our specialists are studying these proposals. Today we came to the conclusion about accelerating the implementation of these works. We believe that the signing of a new strategic partnership agreement with the EU is possible in 2022," Bayramov said.
The Minister also noted that the EU remains the main foreign trade partner of Azerbaijan, the trade turnover in 2021 amounted to $15.2 billion. Negotiations to sign a new agreement began in 2017.
Earlier it was reported that the document was agreed upon by more than 90% and some questions on the trade and economic part remain open. Despite the fact that in Baku they call the new agreement “on strategic partnership”, EU representatives avoid this wording.
The new document that will replace the 1996 partnership and cooperation agreement will be more comprehensive.—06B-
