Azerbaijan Is on the Path of Democracy, Says Ilham Aliyev

The South Caucasus Forum started in Baku is organized by the international center of Nizami Ganjavi and the Madrid club. The forum involves more than 60 current and former heads of state and government, prominent politicians, as well as 400 experts from 70 countries and international organizations.

Participants of the meeting discuss issues of democracy, inclusive and socially cohesive society, and economic, social and political empowerment of women.

Welcoming the participants of the forum, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev called Azerbaijan a unique country successfully cooperating with both the West and the Islamic world. Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan is on the path of democracy, pursuing political and economic reforms.

He further emphasized the Armenian aggression, not implementing Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

Queen Noor of Jordan said that the creativity and ideas of Nizami remains relevant today. The ideas of humanism, social justice continues to be in demand by human civilization. She emphasized the need to resolve conflicts.

It is important to clarify the fate of missing persons as a result of conflicts.

So, just as a result of the Karabakh conflict, about 4,600 people are still missing, she said.

The Forum continued its work in sections. The Baku part of the forum will end on May 8, and then disperse the participants by regions.

Among the participants there are the President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, Queen Noor of Jordan, the head of the Senate of Jordan Tahir al-Masri, the former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, the former head of the Greek Foreign Ministry Dora Bakoyannis, the Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, a special adviser to the Secretary General of UN Nafis Sadik, the former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the former President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, the former UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor, etc.

The International Center of Nizami Ganjavi was established in 2012 as a non-profit, non-political organization and promotes the heritage of Nizami and the Azerbaijani culture as a whole.

The Club of Madrid is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of democracy and changes in the international community. It consists of 80 former presidents and prime ministers from 56 countries, and is the largest forum in the world of former heads of state and government. -06D-
