Cellmates refused to take care of the paralyzed activist
The health of Famil Khalilov, a first-group disabled person and a public activist, who is being held in the sanitary unit of the Baku pre-trial detention center-1, is extremely serious. There are numerous wounds on his body, and he himself is in an unsanitary condition, said Kichikhanym Khalilov's wife.
Famil has paralyzed hands and is unable to take care of himself. However, he was not assigned a social worker in the pre-trial detention center. During his entire stay in the pre-trial detention center, he was cared for by his cellmates. However, now they refuse to do so, said his wife, who visited him on August 2.
“Famil said that his cellmates had asked the administration to move him to another room. The cellmate who helped the Family said that he had been caring for the Family for three months, but he was tired and could no longer," K.Khalilova said.
She stressed that her husband himself cannot get up and sit down, and needs outside help. "His whole body is covered in sores. Because of the unsanitary conditions, he smells bad. Sores do not heal because they are not treated with medicines," she continued.
At the same time, the activist was once again refused transfer to house arrest. "The family received the court decision on July 31. As a reason for refusal, it is indicated that all necessary assistance is provided to him in the pre-trial detention center, and a social worker is assigned to him. But this is an absolute lie!
I leave three young children at home several times a week and go to the pre-trial detention center to bathe my family. No one is helping us. I have to spend 30-35 manats on a taxi every time," Khalilova said. K.Khalilova's words were also confirmed by lawyer Bahruz Bayramov, who also met with the activist today. The prison service could not be reached for comment.
*Khalilov was detained on May 2 and charged under Article 234.4.3 of the Criminal Code (manufacture, transportation, possession of drugs on a large scale for the purpose of sale). The court arrested him for 4 months during the investigation. This article provides for imprisonment for a term of 5 to 12 years.
Khalilov's relatives claim that he is innocent and has been punished for criticizing the government on social media.
