Congress of REAL to Be Held December 17
Baku / 13.12.17 / Turan: The founding Congress of the Republican Alternative Party (REAL) will be held at the headquarters of the Müsavat Party on December 17. This was reported to Turan by the executive secretary of REAL, Natik Ceferli.
According to him, about 300 delegates are expected to attend the Congress. "1,920 citizens of Azerbaijan have become members of the initiative group for the establishment of the REAL party. In all regions of the country, El Meclis (people's congresses) have been formed," Ceferli said.
The Congress is expected to adopt the party's charter and program, and the formation of elected bodies - the Meclis and the Control and Revision Commission.
The chairman of the party will be elected by the Meclis formed at the Congress.
It should be noted that REAL repeatedly appealed to the Baku Executive Power with a request to provide premises for the Congress, but was refused. Business centers and hotels also refused to give premises for holding the REAL Congress under various pretexts.
The REAL movement was established in 2009, opposing amendments to the Constitution, allowing for the stay of one person as President of the country for more than two terms.
The leader of the movement Ilgar Memmedov was arrested in 2013 on far-fetched charges of organizing riots in the Ismayilli region in January 2013 and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
However, the European Court of Human Rights has found his arrest unlawful and politically motivated and decided to immediately release him. This decision of the Strasbourg Court, taken in May 2014, has not yet been enforced.
On December 5, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe launched a procedure for investigating the failure of Azerbaijan to comply with the ECHR decision in the Memmedov case, the result of which may be the application of sanctions against Baku, if the opposition activist is not released. -03B06-

"The visit of Polish President Andrzej Duda to the to Armenia-Azerbaijan border area in the company of members of the EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA), unfortunately, is another demonstration of anti-Azerbaijani policy of different EU member countries and European institutions. We deeply regret that President of the country which is officially a “strategic partner” of Azerbaijan has participated in the unacceptable diplomatic “binocular show” leading to the aggravation of relations between Azerbaijan and Poland,”" reads the statement on the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ account on X (formerly Twitter).
