Congressman Adam Schiff Calls on Appropriations Committee to Cancel Security Funding in Azerbaijan
Congressman Adam Schiff sent a letter to Senators Patrick Leahy and Lindsey Graham, and to Congressmen Kay Granger and Nita Lowey - Chair and Members of the Subcommittee on State and Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives and the Senate. He urged them to cease all support, including financing of the International Military Education and Training (IMET) for Azerbaijan, reports the Turan correspondent from Washington.
Schiff cited the repatriation and release officer Ramil Safarov as the basis for his request. Safarov was sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary for the 2004 murder of Gurgen Markarian during participation in a NATO "Partnership for Peace" course.
The message from Schiff, which demonstrates a unilateral approach to the Karabakh conflict, expressed the view that the U.S. investment in IMET for Azerbaijan was a failure and was not conducive to the stability of the region, or the assimilation of democratic values and respect for human rights. -25D -
