Chehreganly Urges Azerbaijan Authorities to Protect Rights of Compatriots in Iran
Mahmudali Chehreganly, leader of the Movement of National Awakening of South Azerbaijan (MNESA) urged Baku to protect the rights of Iranian Azerbaijanis. In an interview with "Voice of America", he said that he plans to visit Azerbaijan in the coming weeks. He opined that President Ilham Aliyev should pursue a more active policy to protect the rights of Azerbaijanis of Iran.
Chehreganly referred to recent statements by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that said after World War II, the Government of the People's Republican Party of Turkey after returned expatriate Azerbaijani’s to the Soviet Union. The Azerbaijanis were immediately shot. According to Chehreganly, Erdogan's government holds a similar policy for Iranian Azerbaijanis.
Chehreganly claims that Erdogan's government has nearly extradited him to Tehran. Chehreganly praised U.S. Congressman Dana Rohrabaher for raising the issue of granting the right to self-determination to Iranian Azerbaijanis. Chehreganly claimed that the Iranian government did not provide assistance to Azerbaijanis in Ahar and Varzigan after the earthquake in August and did not allow other Azerbaijanis to help them. -03D06-
