On 3 February, the Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Habil Mammadov rejected an appeal against the decision of the Narimanov court to arrest all the property of economist and politician Gubad Ibadoglu.

‘During the session, we presented documents on four flats that belonged to our family since Soviet times. In addition, we presented documents on the sources of our family's finances and inheritance of the flats. The real estate belongs to my wife and the flats were purchased in the 1990s and inherited by my wife. However, the court, instead of issuing a legal judgement, rejected the complaint,’ Ibadoglu told Turan Agency.

The decision will be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. Ibadoglu added that his health continues to deteriorate.

‘My health now depends only on medicine and God, because doctors refuse to examine and treat me, they are afraid. The last time I went to the doctor, he asked me if I was allowed to come to the hospital? I cannot get adequate medical care in Azerbaijan. Now my state of health is worse than before. The last examination six months ago showed that the aortic aneurysm continues to expand and surgery is necessary. There is a serious risk for life,’ he noted.

Moreover, the heart valve function and blood pressure have deteriorated. With the help of medication, the blood sugar levels have been controlled. However, taking strong medication for a long time causes additional problems,’ Ibadoglu said.

As for the investigation of his criminal case, it was terminated on 29 July 2024. ‘However, no further information has been provided to me and my defence lawyers since then,’ he said.

Against this background, on 27 November 2024, the court suddenly decided to confiscate the immovable property of Gubad Ibadoglu's family. Apparently, this was the authorities' response to the numerous demands of the international community to stop pressurising Ibadoglu and release him abroad for medical treatment.
