Convicted Human Rights Activist Ilham Amiraslanov Started Hunger Strike

Serving a prison sentence in Jail N5 (village Khalaj), the Kura Civil Society Staff activist Ilham Amiraslanov on August 23 began a hunger strike in protest against the violation of his rights. Turan was told by people close to Amiraslanov.

He has formally notified the prison guards of his protest. The prisoner complains of ignoring his requests for a transfer to a prison settlement in connection with the completion of a third of the term and parole at the expiration of half the term.

Amiraslanov states that any violation of it is not allowed, which means that there are no grounds for refusal of release on parole.

He believes that the biased decision against him was politically motivated, as other inmates are released "for money".

Amiraslanov also requires the removal of barriers to the admission of representatives of international organizations.

* Ilham Amiraslanov is known as a principled and consistent fighter for the rights of people affected by floods in 2010. In early June 2012, he was arrested on charges of illegal possession of weapons and tortured.

On September 13 the Sabirabad district court sentenced him to 2 years in prison on charges of illegal possession of weapons (Article 228.1 of the Criminal Code). On January 25, 2013 the Shirvan Court of Appeal upheld the verdict in force. Amnesty International recognized Amiraslanov as a "prisoner of conscience". -06B –
