Court Denies Taksim Square Development
Defenders of the Gezi Park in central Istanbul have won. The Administrative Court refused all applications for the development of the park and Taksim Square, which became the main reason for mass protests recently throughout Turkey.
The governmental plans to build a multifunctional complex did not follow the law. Now the government can either plan a new urban project, or appeal the decision of the court.
However, to the opposition, this verdict means much more than just a rejection of development. For them, it is a loss for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who saw the protesters as terrorists and saboteurs. The Prime Minister has launched a massive pro-government campaign, the main purpose of which was to discredit the opposition. -02В-
