Court leaves Intigam Aliyev in custody
Yesterday the Nasimi District Court of Baku rejected the petition to change the measure of restraint for the Legal Education Society (LES) head, Intigam Aliyev, from arrest to house arrest. Turan was told by Aliyev’s lawyer Anar Gasymly.
According to him, the court also dismissed the application for recognition of violations of the law during the search of Aliyev’s apartment and office of LES.
Recall that during the searches were seized electronic media owned by members of the Aliyev family, and briefs regarding several citizens and related to the protection of their rights in the European Court of Human Rights. These materials, according to the defense, are not relevant to the criminal case against Aliyev.
The defense intends to appeal the decision of the Nasimi Court in the Baku Court of Appeal.
Aliyev was arrested Aug. 8 on charges of tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship and abuse of office.
He denied the charges and said they are politically motivated.
Amnesty International has declared him a "prisoner of conscience." -06D-
