Court of Appeal keeps journalist in custody
Baku Court of Appeal on 24 June considered an appeal against the extension of pre-trial detention of journalist Nargiz Absalamova arrested in the "Abzas Media" case.
Lawyer Rovshana Rahimova told Turan that the court did not satisfy the appeal, leaving in force the 11 June decision of the Khatai court to extend the journalist's arrest for 3 months.
The lawyer considers the court's decision illegal and unreasonable.
* Since 20 November 2023, six journalists and media workers of "Abzas Media" were arrested on charges of "currency smuggling". They denied the charges, linking the criminal case to investigations into corruption published in "Abzas Media".
International media protection organisations called on the Azerbaijani authorities to immediately release the detained journalists and to stop the pressure on the media.
