Democrats Should Stop New Bashar Assads - Outcome of Conference in Prague
Baku / 11.10.17 / Turan: On October 8-10, the 21st conference Forum-2000 (Strengthening Democracy in Uncertain Times - 21st Forum 2000 Conference) was held in Prague, founded by Vaclav Havel in the name of the struggle for democracy in the world.
The conference was attended by public figures, human rights activists, writers and journalists from different countries.
At the concluding session on the topic of how to defend democracy in the modern world, spoke Karl Gershman, the President of the National Endowment for Democracy (USA), Penda Mbowow, a Professor from Senegal, Adam Michnik, editor-in-chief of the Polish newspaper Wyborcza, former President of Bolivia, Jorge Ramirez, as well as Leila Yunus, director of the Institute of Peace and Democracy (Azerbaijan).
The presenter of the final meeting was Simon Panek, the founder of the non-governmental public organization People in Need, Czech Republic.
Speaking with the final word, Leila Yunus described the political regimes in Azerbaijan and the countries of Central Asia, pointing out that the dictators are leading the countries along the Syrian way and the democratic community should stop the new Bashar Assads. -02D-

The gas pipeline from Russia to Iran will pass through Azerbaijan, its route has been agreed upon. Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev told reporters, TASS reports.

On January 17, the Khatai District Court of Baku rejected the requests for house arrest for journalists Aynur Elgünesh and Natig Djavadly, employees of Meydan TV, their lawyers, Elchin Sadigov and Zibeyda Sadigova reported to Turan news agency. According to the lawyers, there are no legal or procedural grounds for keeping the journalists in detention. The journalists themselves stated that the criminal case against them had been fabricated to punish them for their professional activities. The defense intends to appeal the court's refusal to transfer the journalists to house arrest.
