Emin Ibrahimov is on hunger strike in jail for the 9th day
Former diplomat Emin Ibrahimov, who is being held in the Shuvelan pre-trial detention center-3, is on a hunger strike for the 9th day in protest against unjustified arrest. He intends to continue the hunger strike until the termination of his criminal prosecution, Ibrahimov's relatives told Turan. In turn, human rights defender Rufat Safarov said that Ibrahimov was threatened by fellow inmates on the instructions of the administration of the pre-trial detention center.
After attracting public attention, Ibrahimov was transferred to a 2-bed cell. However, this is not enough, he should be transferred to a medical and sanitary unit and placed under medical supervision, the human rights defender believes.
"Emin Ibrahimov is a prisoner of conscience. He was arrested for criticizing the authorities and subjected to torture and ill-treatment. Such an attitude towards political prisoners indicates that the violation of rights in Azerbaijan has reached its peak. The country's leadership is responsible for the life and health of this prisoner," Safarov said.
Emin Ibrahimov was detained on July 22. Two days later, he was accused of stabbing Kamal Shukurov, a resident of the village of Garachukhur (articles 126.2.4, intentional harm to health with a weapon) and 221.1 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code. However, Ibrahimov said that he had done nothing of the kind and considered his arrest to be the revenge of the authorities for criticism.
Ex-diplomat Emin Ibrahimov was in the diplomatic service in 2007-2020. From 2012 to 2016, he worked at the Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States, from 2016 to 2019 – at the diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan in Uruguay.
On March 13, 2020, Emin Ibrahimov submitted his resignation to the Foreign Ministry in protest against the violation of the right to vote and the suppression of freedoms in the country and retired from diplomatic activity. After that, he criticized the Azerbaijani authorities for violations of citizens' rights and falsifications, speaking in the media and social networks.
