On Sunday, the Investigation Department for Serious Crimes questioned about 20 employees of the Baku Office of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty. All of them were released after they had been caused to sign not divulging the investigation secrets.

"In general, reporters were asked questions related to their professional activities,"  the statement said.

At the same time the lawyer Yalchin Imanov was suspended from defending the rights of the employees of Radio Liberty. By the decision of the First Deputy General Prosecutor Rustam Usubov, Imanov is held as a witness and therefore he has been excluded from the defense.

"The decision of the First Deputy General Prosecutor Rustam Usubov to dismiss me from the protection of employees of Radio Liberty is illegal. I regard this as an attempt to leave the Baku Office without defense," Imanov told Turan.

The lawyer said the search operations around Radio Liberty have no legal connection with the criminal case against NGOs. "Actions against Radio Liberty pursue the goal of pressure on the radio station for its independent, balanced and impartial coverage of events. The very process of searching, sealing the office, not allowing the staff to work, removal of the lawyer, and questioning the employees without defenders is a pressure campaign on Radio Liberty," said Imanov. -0-

The police are conducting mass arrests of employees of the Baku Office of Radio Liberty.

The Editor in Chief of the Baku Office Zeynal Mammadli told Turan last night and Sunday morning radio workers were forcibly delivered to the police investigation. As of 14.00 on Dec. 28 at least 12 people were detained.

The daily program leader Kamran Mahmudov is among those detained. He was taken out of his home at night and was not allowed even to put on shoes and clothing. As the journalist's wife said, two police officers burst into the apartment, scaring the children. After hours of questioning Mahmudov was released.

The technical officer Metanet Abdinova was detained, brought to the police and then to the prosecutor. The editor of the Russian version of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty Chinghiz Sultansoy and the reporter Vusala Mehdiyeva were also detained.

The statement posted on the website of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty notes that the staff of the Baku Office planned to sign all the necessary documents with the lawyer of the radio, as there was a need for their legal protection. "Now, however, the forced delivery of the journalists to the prosecutor leaves them with virtually no protection," the statement says.

According to the latest information from Radio Liberty, the lawyer of the Baku Office has been dismissed from the defense, as prosecutors called him as a witness. -06D--
