European Council meeting opens in Prague
Baku/06.10.22/Turan: On October 6-7, Prague will host the first meeting of the European Council, an informal meeting of the leaders of European countries. The event was organized by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and chaired by Charles Michel, President of the European Council.
On the eve of the European Council meeting, the leaders will take part in the first meeting of the European Political Community on October 6. Within the framework of the meeting, Turkish President Erdogan will meet with Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, as well as a four-way meeting with the participation of European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
At an informal meeting of the European Council, EU leaders will discuss the Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine, the annexation of its territories and economic, military, political and financial support for Ukraine. Besides, the leaders will consider how best to protect Europe's critical infrastructure.
The main attention of the leaders will be focused on solving the problem of energy shortage caused by the abandonment of Russian oil and gas.
Against this background, the issues of economic support to the population of Europe, which is suffering from a sharp increase in energy tariffs, will be resolved.
Note that a meeting of the European Political Community will be held separately. The EU leaders agreed on its creation at a meeting of the European Council in June 2022. Its goal is to unite the countries of the European continent for cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
The opening of the meeting will take place on October 6 at 13:15 local time. A round table with the participation of the leaders is scheduled for 16:30, and bilateral meetings will begin at 19:00. A press conference will be held at the end of the plenary session.
On October 7, the working sessions will continue. At the end of the event, a press conference will be held with the participation of the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission and the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. -02B-

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The trial was suspended after Ibrahim, in protest against the illegal arrest, began banging his head against the "aquarium cage", trying to commit suicide. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
