European Court for Human Rights obliges Armenian and Azerbaijani authorities to pay compensation to refugees
Strasbourg / 12.12.17 / Turan: On December 12, the European Court for Human Rights ruled on the complaints of Azerbaijani refugees from Armenia (Chiragov and others), as well as the Armenian refugee from Azerbaijan Sarkisyan. The European Court found violations of the rights of residents of Lachin region of Azerbaijan Chiragov, Jabrailov, Hasanov, Pashayev and two others. The plaintiffs claimed that their property was seized by the Armenians in 1992, after which they could not return to their homeland.
The Armenian Government had to pay 5,000 euros in respect of pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage to each of the applicants and a total amount of 28,642.87 pounds sterling for costs and expenses.
At the same time, the court notes that it is not currently possible to calculate the material damage.
The European Court made a similar decision today in respect of the applicant Sarkisyan, whose family was forced to flee the village of Gulistan in 1992 during the Karabakh conflict and lost her property.
The court ruled that the Azerbaijani authorities must pay 5,000 euro moral compensation to the Sargsyan family and another 30,000 euros for common expenses. -02D-
