German MP Suspected of Accepting Bribes from Baku
Baku / 10/17/18 / Turan: Transparency International considers it necessary to begin an investigation against the Bundestag deputy from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Karin Strenz on suspicion of accepting bribes from Azerbaijan.
Investigation by experts of the Council of Europe gives enough reason to suspect the deputy of corruption, a member of the Board of Transparency International, Wolfgang Wodarg, told Radio Deutsche Welle.
This refers to the investigation of the organization European Stability Initiative. The final document entitled Caviar Diplomacy cited evidence that Baku was engaged in bribing the rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee, who oversaw the fulfillment of Azerbaijan"s commitments to the Council of Europe.
PACE deputies confirmed that representatives of Azerbaijan tried to gain loyalty to the Assembly"s rapporteurs through numerous gifts - black caviar, carpets, expensive alcohol and jewelry, as well as offering them to use the services of prostitutes for free.
In a report submitted in April of this year, the names of several dozen PACE members, who are guilty of violation of the rules of the Assembly and the deputy"s code of conduct, according to the investigation.
Among them is the former Bundestag deputy from the Christian Social Union, Eduard Lintner, who was a member of the PACE from 1999 to 2010. He is called the "key lobbyist" of Azerbaijan in the report. And it is he who apparently attracted Karin Strentz to lobbying in favor of Baku. Last summer, she along with Lintner and a dozen other parliamentarians from other countries was declared a life ban on entering the PACE building in Strasbourg.
Karin Strenz says she did not know that Lintner Line M-Trade consulting company was financed from Azerbaijan.
As it turned out, the Berlin public prosecutor"s office was really interested in the story of Karin Strenz, but did not consider the suspicions so convincing as to initiate an investigation. However, a special commission of the Bundestag is conducting its investigation on this matter. -02D-
