GRECO Prepares Recommendations on Combating Corruption in PACE
Strasbourg / 07/01/17 / Turan: On June 30, the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) published an assessment of the Code of Conduct for the members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
The document notes the significant shortcomings of the Code and indicates the need for a number of improvements.
GRECO Chairman Marin Mrchela welcomed the Assembly's steps in response to allegations of corruption that the Assembly was facing.
"The prevention and combating of corruption begins with us. I am convinced that the Parliamentary Assembly will take into account the opinion of GRECO when reviewing and strengthening measures to ensure honesty," he said.
GRECO prepared this assessment at the request of the PACE Committee on Rules of Procedure, Immunities and Institutional Matters.
These measures in particular were caused by scandals about the bribery of a number of PACE deputies by Azerbaijan and PACE head Pedro Agramunt, who in fact supported the dictatorial regime of Bashar Assad, ignoring the opinion of the Council of Europe. -02D-
